The truth is I never left you

Spent my first full day in Dublin casually moving about and setting things up. Having stayed in a hotel my first night, I moved into my student apartment at Trinity College this afternoon. The room has its own bathroom and a shared kitchen space in the hall between all of the rooms on the floor. It's very college-dorm-y, with the requisite furniture from the 60s and a nice, large desk from which I can do some work when I need to. (This trip isn't gonna pay for itself! 😏)

I took a little time to buy two things today: a pair of sunglasses, and a new whistle. The whistle is a nice step up from the plastic one I got a couple of weeks ago. Now I gotta find some place to practice. I asked at the front desk at Trinity if there were practice rooms around, and she told me that there weren't, but that I could probably commandeer a small classroom in the arts building and no one would notice. Such an Irish attitude. I love them for that. I wouldn't be surprised if the Irish invented one of my father's favorite phrases: "It is easier to gain forgiveness than permission."

My friend Ian told me about GAZE, the gay film festival that happens to have started this evening. I signed up to volunteer, and tonight they gave me a ticket to the opening night film, Deep In Vogue. It's about the vogue scene in Manchester. It was beautifully done, and I got to meet the director afterwards at PantiBar, a popular gay bar in town.

Tonight as I walked back from the pub and turned into the college green of Trinity, suddenly it grew much quieter and darker and lovelier. The buildings here are old, and I could almost feel the weight of the stone and history that this place contains. I'll look forward to exploring it a bit while I'm here.
