Last night I had the privilege of hearing the Galway Ensemble in Residence, the ConTempo Quartet, a classical group, mix it up with 3 trad players at a local church. The venue was beautiful and resonant, as was the music.
Dave Flynn is a composer and musician from Dublin, who works across many musical genres. He composed the classical music that was premiered at this concert. He also played guitar with button accordianist Breanndán Begley (of 'Boys of the Lough' fame) and Mick O'Brien, who played hauntingly beautiful Uilleann pipes as well as a bit of Irish flute. It was interesting to hear the trad mix in with the contemporary. They ended the evening with a rousing polka; it was hard to stay seated for that one.
During the interval, I struck up a conversation with a woman and her daughter sitting behind me. We talked about how we both came to this concert, and I mentioned that I played bodhran. No sooner had I said that, than her husband arrived. Come to find out he runs a bodhran school in the summer, and he recommended a local teacher who might be able to give me some lessons.
Interesting fact: Daylight Savings Time in Ireland begins 2 weeks after the US, so I'm only 4 hours ahead of the East Coast, and 7 ahead of the West Coast. For now.
Today there is more sun and even blue skies...a lovely day for a promenade.
