Walking through the neighborhood yesterday, I already felt a bit of settling in here. The immediate environs are packed with B&Bs, since we're right near the shoreline. Lots of restaurants and shops to choose from, though many are somewhat touristy. There is a food store just around the corner that specialises in organic and natural foods, but the less-expensive chain store is a bit more of a hike. Ah, for an unlimited budget; not this trip. :)
Ye Americans, next time you watch the news on the telly, see if you even notice that there's music playing almost constantly in the background. Here, none at all. The newscast is nearly void of anything but--the news, being read. It was kind of strange watching it at first; it felt like something was missing. Then I realized I didn't need the music to help the news along, driving the pace. I love discovering stuff like that.
Last night I met a Polish guy, at a Russian restaurant, who'd spent a few years in Tel Aviv. He came to Galway as a pastry chef when the economy was still good, and stayed here to study marketing while the economy is like it is everywhere else in the world. He's also into photography, so I'm going to try to work out a photo safari somewhere with him.
No go as of yet with a bodhran teacher. The first I called is unavailable at the moment, and the second is a good 40 minutes away, though he said he comes into Galway City often enough that we might be able to meet a few times while I'm here. Tonight I plan to go to the Crane Bar, which is not too far from my digs.
Today's shout out goes to Russell Hobbs, the presumed manufacturer of the electric hot water kettle in my kitchen. That thing boils water in about 20 seconds. What a masterpiece of engineering it is.
