Holy Trinity, Batman

Yesterday I had the pleasure of meeting Luiz, a friend of my friend Jim back home. Luiz is a professor at Trinity, and he kindly gave me a little tour of some places tourists don't go, including a couple of academic buildings and, coolest of cool, the faculty building. Straight out of every British murder mystery, it came complete with reading rooms, large portraits, a quiet hush, and rules like no photography or note taking. We had coffee and chatted. So civilized.

Although ten years ago I'd been to the old library where the Book of Kells is housed and displayed, it was nice to see it again (this time for free--it's good to be with the faculty), and the Long Room is just stunning. Ten years ago we didn't have panoramic cameras on our phones, but we do now.

In the evening I volunteered at GAZE, where I also got to see one of the films during my shift. At first I was bummed that I would have to miss the ending because of my volunteer duties, but it was clear about fifteen minutes in that I'd be fine. Terrible, awful film. Well done technically, but disturbing and borderline psychological torture. But enough about my childhood. Still, it was fun meeting my fellow volunteers, one of whom works at the Irish Traditional Music Archive, which I hope to visit while I'm here. Everyone who's volunteering is kind and interesting, and many are from other countries as well.

According to my iPhone, I got in over 20,000 steps and 10 miles yesterday, equating to 1207 calories. Hoping I can keep that up and shed some of my winter weight. Yes, I know it's August.
